You can submit at any time. However, to reduce the work load, batches of submissions will be uploaded by a set date for promotion, using the hook of an international or national day of observance or celebration. If you provide your social media account details, you will be made a collaborator and/or tagged (Instagram only), and you can help out by sharing posts.

Submission requirements (have a look at the listings to get an idea of the format)

  1. Soundtrack in mp3 format (5-15 minutes in length is ideal but some tracks are shorter)
  2. Field recording notes including location, date/time of year, equipment, conditions, sounds noted
  3. A minimum of 2 high quality images – one as a hero image for the listing
  4. Botanical (species) notes for your tree + link to information source
  • By submitting a sonic tree portrait you are claiming the rights to this recording, unless it is clear you are submitting on behalf of another party. All credits for soundtracks, images, and field recording details are required with the submission.
  • Provide the recognised botanical name(scientific name)for the tree you wish to submit to arboreus.earth, as well as the common or local name if there is one.
  • Recording notes needed include—your name, date (month/year) of recordings (or range of dates), general location of the tree recorded (coordinates not needed), including country (please provide the First Nations name as well if appropriate).
  • Audio format – embedded tracks can only be mp3. Ideally track length should be between 5-15 minutes in duration. If you submit a .wav it will be compressed.
  • Single source sounds (one single sound from one part of the tree) or multi-track mixes accepted (preferably no music or special effects). Details of the tracks and any field recording notes you wish to include (see other listings for ideas).
  • More creative tracks with music or special effects, or texts, can be added at the bottom of a listing as a creative tribute to the tree.
  • A minimum of two photos at 72-96dpi (2000px wide) required—one for the feature image, the other for the tree’s portrait page. You may provide more if you wish – these will be put in a gallery.
  • Plant notes (specimen or botanical info) is also required – covering basic details of the tree’s size, bark, leaves, flowers, seeds, habitat and role in the ecosystem and cultural points of interest.
  • Provide a URL for a weblink of your choice that will be hyperlinked to your name – please ensure this link is working.
  • Contact details are required so we can contact you about your submission if needed.
  • Please email us when you’ve made your submission.
  • Please note the submission of a sonic tree portrait to arboreus.earth is not a guarantee of being included on the site.
  • Trees must not be physically damaged or altered through the field recording process. We encourage minimal interference in the practice of recording trees.
